A challenge in children’s reference work is that many of their questions are imposed queries they come from what an adult asked them to find out, not their own interests. Developing readers can use the read-aloud feature to understand text that is above their current reading level. Another beneficial feature in many online reference sources is the ability for the text to be read aloud. ![]() Children want to be able to use these resources on their own or with minimal scaffolding from adults, so a clear and useful table of contents, indexes, guide words, chapter headings and subheadings are very important, especially in print materials. These resources should be easy to read, attractive, have larger text, and many illustrations or photos. As a crucial part of education, “all reference service to children must be conducted within the context of developmental parameters” (Bopp, 2011). Traditionally defined, reference sources for children include a variety of materials for youth up to the age of 13.
